Yesterday, the family and I hauled a bunch of hay, to try and stock up a bit before winter hits. And it gets
really expensive - it's already at/over $200 a ton for alfalfa and shudder to think what it'll cost in a couple months.
At $95 a ton, Papa's idea was to get a bunch of grass hay up for the cattle, but the hay looked so good we bought some for the horses as well.
Ended up loading 3 3/4 tons into the trailer and unloading yesterday, in two trips. Really didn't expect to be able to get 2 ton into the horse trailer at a time, so that was a nice surprise. Then today, my sister and I split a load between our horses and Papa used the last load to fill up his horse hay room. In the end, we hauled 7 3/4 tons of hay over both days.
And boy, is my body feeling it. My back is good, so that means I lifted correctly, but boy oh boy do my arms and hands hurt.
I ended up stacking all of what we got yesterday and that was the plan for today. We were in a different part of the field today though, and the bales were heavier. Luckily, my sister's friend helped us today and with her help, we could get them stacked four high. There is no way I could have thrown the fourth one up by myself as barely got a third bale up.
Know it's not just being tired, because in the middle of the first load, the bales were lighter again and I could throw them up by myself.
On our second trip in the afternoon, sis and her friend went hiking (this was a planned thing - we didn't find out about the hay deal until Friday night), but my uncle could come and help. Without him, we wouldn't have made a second trip - we were all too tired! He did the stacking on this load though, we just had to get the bales to the trailer, which isn't quite as hard. Plus, with Uncle M. stacking, I could be out in the field helping mom and Papa.
